Working Group - Kidney Allocation Working Group

Working Group - Kidney Allocation Working Group

The Kidney Allocation Working Group is Chaired by Prof Kate Wyburn. The Project Manager is Sarah White.

The aim of the Project is to deliver consultative forums to assist with the development of a Kidney Allocation Workplan. The Kidney Allocation Workplan will provide recommendations to further evolve the deceased donor kidney allocation algorithm in Australia, to ensure a national approach to optimize organ and tissue donation, retrieval, and transplantation. The Kidney Allocation Workplan will provide strategies for the Kidney Allocation Review Committee to review organ allocation processes to support equity and consistency in practice for Australians needing a transplant.

The Kidney Allocation Working Group undertook a review of the renal allocation system in Australia, optimising transplantation outcomes for patients and ensuring fairness and equity.

The Working Group focused on:

  • improving access to transplant for highly sensitised patients

  • improved usage of donated kidneys

  • improved matching for younger patients.

The updated algorithm went live on the 4th of May 2021.

In 2023, a new Working Group was convened and are working on a scoping paper for the next phases for review (see above).
