Description
The Supporting Living Organ Donors (SLOD) Program
The SLOD Program commenced in 2013 and has progressively expanded over the years.
The Department of Health, Disability are Ageing is pleased to announce that reimbursements available under the SLOD Program will increase from 1 July 2025.
Donors who undergo surgery on or after 1 July 2025 are eligible for:
Up to 9 weeks (342 hours) paid leave reimbursed at the national minimum wage, or in exceptional circumstances up to 18 weeks of paid leave (requires the Extended Medical Leave Form)
A $500 one-off payment to help Australian donors with out-of-pocket costs
Up to $4,000 for travel and accommodation costs (where costs exceed $500 - proof required, including the first $500)
Support person travel and accommodation costs, during the donor’s hospital admission (included in the $4,000 total)
Overseas donors travel and accommodation costs up to $4,000 (proof required).
What else you should know:
If the donation surgery is after 1 July 2025, the donor can claim leave for work-up appointments and out-of-pocket costs before 1 July 2025.
If the donor doesn’t proceed to surgery but has undertaken work-up testing, they can claim for work-up appointments from 1 July 2025 onwards under the new criteria. Appointments before 1 July 2025 follow the current criteria.
The updated documents (attached) will facilitate applicants applying for these increased amounts and provide helpful information about the SLOD Program.
